How long have you been in the real estate industry for?
Larry – I have been in real estate here in Denver, the Foothills, and Steamboat since 1978 so about 41 years.
Barb – Except for a brief few years of teaching English in Denver Public Schools, I have been in the industry since 1985.
What initially drew you to the real estate industry?
Larry – I had been a lawyer in Virginia and became enamored by real estate developments. When the call of the West beckoned, I packed my bags and climbed into my MGB sports car and followed the sun. My next job was selling commercial real estate for Trowbridge & Co. I was then attracted to the early, exciting development of Market Center in lower downtown and became a part of that groundbreaking project. Then I became vice president of Genesee Company charged with developing office buildings in the Foothills. I then started my own company and became a pioneer in the new burgeoning Denver loft revolution. My company built seven new loft projects that became home to over 200 families. My wife Barb was the vice-president of marketing and sales.
Barb – After being a stay at home mother for 15 years, I decided to start my career in real estate. I applied for and received a real estate license and teaching certificate at the same time. The first position that became available was that of a property manager for a small real estate firm in Evergreen. In 1986, the market was in a downturn and people were having a tough time selling their homes. The managing broker for Stanbro Real Estate was Gary Jarrett, a former Philadelphia Flyers hockey player, and he wanted to start a rental division to better serve his clients. I was hired to set up the rental division and run it. One of my first rental clients was the drummer from the band Chicago, Danny Seraphine. It was an exciting new venture!
What has been your biggest accomplishment in your career?
Both – Probably being a part of Denver’s initial growth, helping develop all of those multifamily loft buildings, and through Larry’s public service helping to create big public improvements.
What makes LIV Sotheby’s International Realty unique?
Both – Being a part of the best real estate company in the metro area, LIV Sotheby’s International Realty is right in line with our core values that we both hold – integrity, creativity, attention to detail and customer service.
What is a trend that you are keeping your eye on right now in the industry?
Both – We are focused on the trend of our contemporaries – the baby boomers downsizing within the metro area and moving here upon retirement. Empty nesters are some of our best clients and that’s why we started our website EmptyNesterRealEstate.com. The number of these boomers is huge and we understand their wants and needs.
Personally, what drives you in this industry?
Both – What drives us both is our desire to be of service to others, to use our minds, and an appreciation of what is beautiful in the world. We love challenges and opportunities. We raised four children here in Colorado and they are all happy, successful, and contributing to society – they are our proudest accomplishments. Building our business has been like raising our family – requiring hard work and innovation and taking joy in the results. We love helping people find the home of their dreams and helping them get the value they should from one of their largest investments, their home. And better yet, we get to do it together.
What are you passionate about?
Both – We are passionate about each other, our family, and our city that we helped build.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of the office?
Both – We love spending time with our kids, grandkids, and our friends. We also love to ski, hike, bike, read, and renovate our home!
What’s your favorite part about living and working in Colorado?
Both – Our favorite part of living and working in Colorado is, first of all, the fact that our four married children and our ten grandchildren all live here. We share lots of time and fun in this beautiful state with them. The holidays are raucous events! We love the friends we’ve made while raising our children here and the new friends who enrich our lives as well.
What community do you live in? What do you like about it?
Both – We have lived in several communities – Evergreen, Genesee, downtown Denver, North Country Club, Steamboat Springs, Grand Lake, and now Greenwood Village. We love our ranch-level home in Greenwood Village and enjoy a view of our beloved mountains. With the incredible weather that we receive, we also enjoy our beautiful garden and swimming pool!
