Despite May showers, on May 7, 2016 LIV Sotheby’s International Realty brokers and over 5,000 people gathered at the annual Denver Derby Party, a highly anticipated, sold-out event, which was established to benefit the Sean “Ranch” Lough Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which gives scholarships to high-achieving, low-income, first-generation college students from the Denver area to attend CSU, with tuition, room, and board covered at one hundred percent.
“I am privileged to be one of the founders of this fantastic group of people that organizes and hosts this annual event,” said LIV Sotheby’s International Realty broker, Ron Martinez. “I have been charged with leading the Scholarship Committee and am always thrilled to have a fine local CSU attendee carry the Sean Lough flag, keeping the spirit of our friend alive.”
Held annually on the first Saturday in May at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Denver Derby Party draws a crowd of impeccably dressed, mint-julep imbibing revelers to celebrate the Kentucky Derby, and simultaneously invest in the education of Denver’s youth. LIV Sotheby’s International Realty broker, Ron Martinez, one of the founding members of the Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation, has been on the Board of Directors since its existence in 2001.
“We start the finalist selection process in October,” said Martinez. “I go to plays, speeches, their ballgames, visit with counselors, principals, and professors, to find candidates to potentially interview. The process also involves hundreds of resumes and applications. In April, prior to each year’s Derby Party, our committee, along with the help of some professionals at CSU, come to a consensus to elect a winner to celebrate the legend of our dear friend, Sean Lough.”
This year, Martinez had the honor of presenting not one, but three, scholarships to finalists, Stephanie “Stevie” Shock, Rayshawn Kennedy, and Alan Casavantes – the first time ever three winners were awarded a full ride to Colorado State University.
LIV Sotheby’s International Realty sponsored a shopping spree for each finalist, outfitting the winners of the scholarship in upscale Derby attire for the presentation award ceremony that took place at the event.
The Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation scholarship mandates the recipient demonstrate a good GPA, economic need, and hardy personality to match that of the charismatic Sean Lough, the person whom the scholarship was named for.
The Denver Derby Party is run at zero cost, with the help of donations and volunteers and 100% of the proceeds benefit the scholarship given in the name of Sean Lough who was killed in a mountain biking accident in 2001.
