On May 2, 2015 a crowd of over 5,000 gathered at the annual Denver Derby Party, a highly anticipated event which was established to benefit the Sean “Ranch” Lough Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
Held annually on the first Saturday in May at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Denver Derby Party draws a crowd of impeccably dressed, mint-julep imbibing revelers to celebrate the Kentucky Derby, and simultaneously invest in the education of Denver’s youth. LIV Sotheby’s International Realty (LIV SIR) broker Ron Martinez, one of the founding members of the Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation, has been on the Board of Directors since its existence in 2001, and had the honor of presenting this year’s scholarship winner, Zach Valadez, a Littleton High School senior and first in his family to attend college, with a full ride to Colorado State University.
“I am privileged to be one of the founders of this fantastic group of people that organizes and hosts this annual event,” said LIV Sotheby’s International Realty broker, Ron Martinez. “I have been charged with leading the Scholarship Committee and am always thrilled to have a fine local CSU attendee carry the Sean Lough flag, keeping the spirit of our friend alive”
A soon-to-be graduate of Littleton High School, Valadez has maintained a 4.0 GPA and been a member of the Honor Roll through all four years of high school. Captain of the varsity basketball team, Valadez has garnered several unique accolades including an All-League Honorable Mention in 4A, and the Lion Heart award for being the voice and drive of the high school basketball team.
The Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation scholarship, which mandates the recipient demonstrate a good GPA, economic need, and hardy personality to match that of the charismatic, Sean Lough- the person whom the scholarship was named for, will enable Valadez to attend Colorado State University in the fall to study Mathematics, and continue his academic and athletic success.
The Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation gives scholarships to high-achieving, low-income, first-generation college students from the Denver area to attend CSU, with tuition, room, and board covered at one hundred percent.
The Denver Derby Party is run at zero cost, with the help of donations and volunteers and 100% of the proceeds benefit the scholarship given in the name of Sean Lough who was killed in a mountain biking accident in 2001.
